WhatsApp Testing New Feature That Deletes Messages Right After They Are Read
WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new disappearing message feature that automatically removes chats after reading, giving users stronger privacy controls and more flexible message expiration settings across devices.

WhatsApp is working on a new privacy focused feature that could change the way disappearing messages work on the platform. The messaging app is reportedly testing an advanced option that allows messages to vanish immediately after they are read instead of disappearing after a fixed time period.
The new feature has already appeared in beta versions of WhatsApp for Android and is now being rolled out to selected iPhone beta testers as well. According to recent reports, the feature is available for some users running the iOS beta version through Apple’s TestFlight program.
Unlike the current disappearing message system, the new option gives users more control over how long messages remain visible after being opened. Instead of starting the countdown immediately after sending a message, the timer will begin only when the recipient reads it. This approach is expected to provide an additional layer of privacy for users who frequently share sensitive information.
The feature reportedly appears under WhatsApp’s existing disappearing messages settings with a new option called After Reading. Users can choose different expiration durations including five minutes, one hour and twelve hours after the message has been viewed. Once the selected time ends, the message will automatically disappear from the chat.
WhatsApp is also said to have added a backup privacy layer for unread messages. If the recipient never opens the message, the app may automatically remove it after 24 hours. This ensures that old unread chats do not remain stored indefinitely inside conversations.
The feature is designed to work alongside WhatsApp’s current disappearing message system, which already allows users to set messages to disappear after 24 hours, seven days or ninety days. Users can activate these settings for individual chats or make them the default option for all new conversations.
Reports suggest that the upcoming feature will remain optional, meaning users will have to manually enable it if they want to use the new privacy controls. Existing chats will continue functioning normally unless users specifically turn on the After Reading option.
Another important detail is how message deletion may work differently for senders and recipients. According to reports, the sender’s copy of the message could disappear based on the selected timer, while the countdown for the receiver may only begin after the message has actually been read.
Privacy has become one of the biggest focus areas for messaging platforms in recent years, and WhatsApp appears to be expanding its tools to meet growing user demand for secure communication. Features like disappearing messages, chat locks and encrypted backups have already gained popularity among users who want more control over personal conversations.
WhatsApp has not officially confirmed when the feature will be released for all users globally. However, industry reports indicate that broader beta testing may continue over the coming weeks before a wider public rollout begins.
