Hyderabad may soon witness a major transformation in urban transport as officials prepare plans to introduce a ropeway travel system across important parts of the city. The project is being designed on the lines of the successful public ropeway model implemented in Varanasi.

With traffic congestion becoming a growing challenge in Hyderabad, authorities are already focusing on metro rail expansion, flyovers and underpasses. Along with these developments, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority is now exploring aerial transport solutions to improve daily travel and tourism connectivity.

According to proposals under discussion, ropeways could connect popular destinations such as Golconda Fort and Qutb Shahi Tombs through a two kilometre aerial route. Officials are also considering extending the network further towards Nehru Zoological Park, covering nearly six kilometres in total.

Plans are also being prepared for ropeway corridors between Tank Bund and Sanjeevaiah Park, along with routes in busy IT corridor areas. Authorities believe the project can significantly cut travel time for short distances that usually take much longer due to road congestion.

The ropeway system is expected to function as an important last mile connectivity service linking metro stations, railway stations, commercial centres and tourist attractions. Officials say passengers may be able to travel two to three kilometres within just a few minutes once the system becomes operational.

The government intends to develop the project under the Public Private Partnership model to reduce financial burden on the state. At the same time, discussions are underway regarding compensation policies in cases where ropeway lines pass above private properties.

Necessary approvals from the Archaeological Survey of India and the Defence Ministry are also being processed since some proposed routes pass near heritage and restricted areas. Authorities are optimistic that the project will strengthen both urban transport and tourism sectors in Hyderabad.

Officials say tourists will get a unique aerial view of landmarks such as Golconda Fort, Qutb Shahi Tombs and the zoo park. International safety standards and affordable ticket prices are also being considered to make the service accessible for common people.

Experts believe the ropeway system could become a major step towards turning Hyderabad into a smarter and more environment friendly city. The government is expected to prepare a detailed project report soon before moving the proposal into the implementation stage.
