The process to appoint five new judges to the Supreme Court has moved forward after the Collegium recommended a fresh list of candidates to the Central government. The move is aimed at filling vacant positions in the country’s highest court and speeding up the judicial process.

The Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, proposed the names of four senior High Court judges along with a senior advocate of the Supreme Court for elevation to the apex court.

According to the recommendations, the proposed names include Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Justice Sheel Nagu, Bombay High Court Chief Justice Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Madhya Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Chief Justice Justice Arun Palli and senior Supreme Court advocate V Mohana.

The Collegium stated that increasing the strength of judges in the Supreme Court is essential to deal with the heavy backlog of pending cases. Officials believe the appointments will help improve the speed of hearings and overall judicial efficiency.

After receiving the recommendations, the Union Law Ministry will examine the proposed names and forward them for Cabinet approval. Once cleared by the Cabinet, the appointments will be sent to President Droupadi Murmu for final approval.

The development comes at a time when courts across the country are facing increasing pressure due to the large number of pending cases. The proposed appointments are being viewed as an important step towards improving the delivery of justice in the country.
