Industrialist Anil Ambani has suffered a major legal setback after the Supreme Court of India dismissed his petition challenging earlier court orders related to a bank fraud case involving Reliance Communications.
The case revolves around accounts of Reliance Communications, which were classified as fraudulent by multiple banks. Ambani had approached the court seeking relief against the Bombay High Court’s decision that permitted banks to proceed with action.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant rejected the plea, effectively allowing financial institutions to continue their proceedings. However, the court granted Ambani the liberty to present his arguments before a single judge bench of the Bombay High Court regarding the show cause notices issued by banks.
The dispute began when major lenders, including Bank of Baroda, Indian Overseas Bank, and IDBI Bank, flagged the company’s accounts as fraudulent. Initially, a single bench of the Bombay High Court had stayed further action, citing non compliance with Reserve Bank of India guidelines.
Later, the division bench overturned that decision, clearing the way for banks to take action. Following this, Ambani moved the Supreme Court, which has now declined to intervene in the matter.
Meanwhile, the case is part of a broader investigation into alleged financial irregularities involving loans worth over ₹40000 crore. The Enforcement Directorate is probing accusations that funds were diverted and misused through various channels, including shell companies.
Ambani has recently appeared before enforcement authorities as part of the ongoing money laundering investigation. The probe also extends to companies linked to him and other individuals associated with the group.
With the Supreme Court refusing to grant relief, the legal proceedings are expected to continue, marking a significant development in one of the high profile corporate cases in recent times.
