CBSE Class 10 Board Exams Begin Tomorrow First Attempt Mandatory for Improvement

As CBSE introduces the new two exam system from 2026, the board has clarified that every Class 10 student must appear for the first board exam to be eligible for improvement or compartment chances later.

  • First board exam is compulsory for all students.
  • Second exam allowed only for improvement or compartment.
  • Skipping the first exam disqualifies students from the second attempt.

The Class 10 board examinations under CBSE will begin from tomorrow, with the board issuing an important clarification for students and parents ahead of the exams. From 2026, CBSE is moving to a two board exam system, but officials have made it clear that the first examination is mandatory for every student.

In recent weeks, the board received several queries from students asking whether they could skip the first board exam and directly appear for the second one. Responding to this confusion, CBSE stated that no student will be allowed to bypass the first examination under any circumstances.

Students who successfully pass the first board exam will be eligible to appear for the second exam only for improvement purposes. This option is limited to a maximum of three subjects such as Science Mathematics and Social Studies. The second exam also serves as an opportunity for compartment candidates to clear one or two subjects.

CBSE further explained that students who fail to appear in three or more subjects in the first exam will be placed under the essential repeat category. Such students will not be permitted to take the second exam and must wait until the following year to reappear in February.

Those who miss or fail in one or two subjects in the first exam can use the second exam as a compartment attempt to pass. However, students who have already passed Class 10 will not be allowed to write additional subjects later.

The board has firmly stated that students who skip more than three subjects or fail in multiple papers in the first exam will not be given any relaxation to write the second exam. CBSE also clarified that no representations or special requests on this matter will be entertained.

With exams starting tomorrow, CBSE has advised students to attend the first board exam without fail, as it is the only gateway to improvement opportunities under the new examination system.
