The deadly coal mine explosion in Meghalaya has drawn strong reactions from the highest levels of government, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing deep shock over the loss of lives in the tragic incident.
The blast occurred at an illegal coal mine in the Thangsku area of East Jaintia Hills district, killing sixteen workers and triggering frantic rescue operations. Authorities fear that more labourers may still be trapped under debris, as search teams continue to comb the site.
Reacting to the tragedy, Modi conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. To support the affected families, he announced ex gratia relief from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, with two lakh rupees for the next of kin of each deceased worker and fifty thousand rupees for the seriously injured.
Rescue efforts led by district officials have so far recovered sixteen bodies from the mine. According to police, the number of workers present inside the mine at the time of the explosion is yet to be confirmed, keeping concerns high about the final toll.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma also responded swiftly, ordering a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. He assured strict action against those responsible and said negligence in mine safety norms would not be tolerated.
The state government has promised stronger enforcement against illegal mining and tighter safety regulations to prevent such disasters in the future. As investigations begin, the tragedy has once again highlighted the human cost of unlawful mining practices in the region.
