Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian, underlining the urgent need to ensure safe and uninterrupted maritime movement in the region. The discussion comes at a time when global concerns are rising over security and stability in key international trade routes.
During the call, Modi conveyed greetings on the occasions of Eid and Nowruz, expressing hope that the festivals would bring peace, prosperity and stability to the region. He also strongly condemned recent attacks on critical infrastructure, warning that such developments could threaten regional balance and disrupt global supply chains.
The Prime Minister emphasized that safeguarding shipping routes is crucial, calling for all maritime pathways to remain secure and open. He also appreciated the Iranian leadership for taking steps to ensure the safety and well being of Indian nationals residing in the country.
This marks the second conversation between the two leaders since the conflict intensified. Earlier, on March 12, the Iranian President had briefed Modi on the evolving situation and shared insights into recent regional developments.
Meanwhile, the issue has triggered political debate in India. The Congress party criticized the government, accusing it of failing to clearly condemn the attacks involving Iran. Senior leader Jairam Ramesh questioned whether India had officially responded or raised concerns over the situation, suggesting that the government’s stance remains unclear.
He further alleged that despite ongoing strikes and reported attempts at political shifts within Iran, India has not actively pushed for a ceasefire. The opposition has urged the government to use its diplomatic ties to call for an end to the conflict and help restore peace in the region.
