Supreme Court Slams Shaadi.com Over MLA Profile Scam Case

Supreme Court pulled up Shaadi.com over an alleged MLA profile scam saying platforms enable cyber fraud and directed Telangana High Court to independently review FIRs filed against company officials concerned.

The Supreme Court of India has made sharp observations against matrimonial platform Shaadi.com while hearing a case linked to an alleged online marriage scam involving fake political profiles.

The case revolves around a man who allegedly created a fake profile using the photograph of a sitting MLA and targeted unmarried women through the platform. One victim a doctor from Hyderabad was reportedly convinced with marriage promises and cheated of eleven lakh rupees after being told the accused bank accounts were frozen.

When the victim demanded her money back she was allegedly threatened with morphed images being circulated online. Similar complaints later emerged from women in Mumbai and Bengaluru indicating a pattern of fraud.

Police registered cases not only against the accused but also named Shaadi.com officials including founder Anupam Mittal after alleging lapses in verification and monitoring. The Telangana High Court refused to quash the FIRs prompting the accused to approach the Supreme Court.

During the hearing the apex court remarked that such platforms were making it easier for cyber criminals to operate and questioned the safeguards in place. The bench asked the Telangana High Court to independently re examine the matter and take an appropriate decision before closing the hearing.
