- Appeals by Siddharth Reddy and Prathyusha mother were dismissed.
- The convict was ordered to surrender within four weeks.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday delivered a decisive judgment in the long running Prathyusha case bringing legal closure to one of the most discussed incidents in the Telugu film industry. The court dismissed two separate petitions linked to the death of actress Prathyusha and upheld the earlier ruling of the High Court.
The appeal filed by Siddharth Reddy challenging his conviction was rejected with the apex court finding no reason to interfere with the High Court judgment. The bench confirmed the sentence already awarded and directed Siddharth Reddy to surrender before authorities within four weeks.
At the same time the Supreme Court also dismissed a petition filed by Prathyusha mother Sarojini Devi who had sought an enhancement of punishment. With this the court effectively closed all pending legal challenges connected to the case.
The case dates back to February 23 2002 when Prathyusha and Siddharth Reddy were found after consuming pesticide. While Siddharth Reddy survived Prathyusha passed away during treatment leading to widespread public attention and a prolonged legal battle. Investigations later ruled out sexual assault or suffocation and concluded death due to organophosphate poisoning.
Over the years the trial court and High Court delivered verdicts that shaped the course of the case finally culminating in the Supreme Court decision which affirmed the High Court ruling and brought the matter to an end.
