India kicked off their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 journey with a solid statement, defeating the United States by 29 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. The win set the tone for India’s title ambitions in the global tournament.

Asked to bat first after losing the toss, India found themselves under pressure early as wickets fell at regular intervals. Abhishek Sharma departed without scoring, while Shivam Dube failed to make an impact. Despite the early setbacks, Suryakumar Yadav stood tall, anchoring the innings with a composed and aggressive knock.

The Indian captain produced a match-defining performance, scoring 84 runs under pressure to guide his side to a competitive total of 161 for nine in 20 overs. Ishan Kishan contributed 20 runs, while Tilak Varma added a useful 25. For the USA, Van Schalkwyk was the standout bowler, claiming four wickets and restricting India in the middle overs.

Chasing 162, the United States struggled to gain momentum against India’s disciplined bowling attack. Mohammed Siraj struck early, removing both openers cheaply and putting the chase on the back foot. Despite resistance from Milind Kumar, Sanjay Krishnamurthi and Shubham Ranjane, the required run rate continued to climb.

India’s bowlers maintained tight lines and consistent pressure, never allowing the USA to settle. Siraj finished with three wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel picked up two each. Varun Chakravarthy chipped in with one wicket as the USA were restricted to 132 for eight in their allotted overs.

With a balanced performance across departments, India began their T20 World Cup campaign on a confident note, sending a clear message to their rivals as the tournament unfolds.
