Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee President YS Sharmila met senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi at a time when political attention is focused on the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka. The meeting has attracted significant interest amid reports suggesting that Sharmila is seeking a Rajya Sabha berth from Karnataka.
AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal was also present during the discussions. Sharmila was accompanied by her husband Anil Kumar during the meeting, which took place against the backdrop of growing speculation over Congress nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections.
According to political reports, the Congress leadership had assured Sharmila of a Rajya Sabha opportunity when her YSRTP was merged with the party. With vacancies set to be filled in Karnataka, discussions have reportedly intensified regarding her possible candidature.
Sources indicate that Sharmila is keen to represent Andhra Pradesh issues in Parliament and believes a Rajya Sabha seat would help amplify the state’s concerns through the Congress platform. She is also said to have emphasized the need to further strengthen the party in Andhra Pradesh.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Sharmila downplayed speculation surrounding the discussions. She described it as a routine review meeting and said the leaders mainly discussed the latest political developments in Andhra Pradesh.
Even as Congress has not made any official announcement, the meeting has added momentum to ongoing discussions about Sharmila’s political future and her chances in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka.
