In a significant move aimed at addressing the growing issue of elderly neglect, the Telangana government is set to introduce the Telangana Parent Care Bill 2026 in the Assembly today.

The proposed law seeks to ensure that children take responsibility for the well being of their ageing parents. Under the bill, employees who fail to support their parents could face salary deductions, marking a strong step towards social accountability.

As per the provisions, government employees, public sector staff, and even private sector workers will be covered. If found neglecting their parents, up to 15 percent of their monthly salary will be deducted and directly credited to their parents bank accounts.

Officials clarified that the deduction amount will be either 15 percent of the salary or ten thousand rupees whichever is lower. This ensures that the financial burden remains balanced while still providing meaningful support to parents.

To initiate the process, parents without support must submit an application to designated district authorities, typically led by the District Collector. After reviewing the case, officials are expected to resolve it within sixty days and issue directions for salary deductions if necessary.

The bill also includes a grievance redressal system. If complaints are not addressed at the district level, parents can appeal to a state level authority headed by a retired High Court judge, ensuring an additional layer of accountability.

With this legislation, the government aims to strengthen family responsibility systems and provide financial security to elderly parents who are often left without care in modern society.
