GMR Aero Technic has entered into an important defence partnership with Boeing Defence India to carry out heavy maintenance work for the Indian Navy’s P 8I maritime surveillance aircraft. The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening India’s domestic aerospace and defence maintenance capabilities.
The maintenance operations will be carried out at the advanced MRO facility located inside the GMR Aerospace Park at Shamshabad in Hyderabad. Under the agreement, GMR experts will perform structural upgrades, detailed inspections, repainting and system enhancement works for the Navy aircraft following Boeing’s global defence aviation standards.
The Indian Navy currently operates 12 Boeing P 8I aircraft, which are mainly used for maritime surveillance, anti submarine warfare and strategic patrol missions. These aircraft operate from INS Rajali in Tamil Nadu and INS Hansa in Goa, playing a critical role in coastal security and defence operations.
GMR Aero Technic President Ashok Gopinath described the agreement as recognition of the company’s technical expertise and infrastructure strength. He said servicing one of India’s frontline defence aircraft platforms is a matter of pride for the organisation.
Nikhil Joshi stated that the collaboration supports Boeing’s long term objective of strengthening indigenous aerospace and defence capabilities in India. He added that the partnership would help reduce dependence on overseas maintenance facilities for defence aircraft servicing.
