A groundbreaking initiative by the Telangana government is transforming lives and setting a powerful example of social inclusion. The Hydraa Eagle Team, which works to safeguard lakes and government lands in and around Hyderabad, has provided employment opportunities to 16 transgender individuals, giving them both financial stability and a renewed sense of dignity.
The special unit includes 11 transgender women and five transgender men who actively participate in field operations aimed at preventing land encroachments and protecting public assets. Team members have become an important part of enforcement activities, helping authorities tackle illegal occupations of government land and water bodies without fear or hesitation.
Officials say the Hydraa Eagle Team has delivered impressive results on the ground. The group recently played a significant role in protecting large stretches of valuable government land in Ailapur under the Aminpur region of Sangareddy district. The team also assisted in safeguarding Edulakunta Lake in Madhapur from encroachment pressures, contributing to major public asset protection efforts.
Beyond enforcement work, the team has earned praise for its ability to communicate with local residents during sensitive operations. Members often help calm tense situations, engage with women in affected communities, and act as a bridge between officials and the public during demolition and eviction drives.
For many members, the job represents much more than employment. Team member Tanshi Roy recalled the challenges transgender people often face in daily life, saying many previously struggled for survival and encountered rejection and humiliation. Today, wearing the Hydraa uniform has brought them recognition and respect from society.
Another member, Gayatri, said the team’s success proves that transgender individuals can excel in any profession when given equal opportunities. She noted that senior officers and colleagues treat them with respect and without discrimination, creating a supportive work environment.
The employment initiative has also improved the financial condition of many team members, enabling them to support families that once distanced themselves from them. More importantly, it has strengthened their confidence and reinforced the belief that they can contribute meaningfully to society while helping protect public resources.
The Telangana government’s decision is now being viewed as a model for inclusive employment and is inspiring discussions on creating similar opportunities across both government and private sectors.
