Hyderabad: In a major step aimed at protecting elderly citizens, the Telangana government has approved a new parents support bill that makes it mandatory for children to take care of their parents. The decision reflects growing concerns over increasing cases of neglect faced by senior citizens.
Under the proposed law, employees who fail to support their parents may face salary deductions. The government will directly transfer up to 15 percent of their salary or Rs 10000 whichever is lower to the parents bank accounts. The bill applies to government and private employees as well as public representatives.
Officials said the move is designed to ensure dignity and financial security for parents during old age. The responsibility will not be limited to sons alone. In the absence of a son, working daughters will be required to take care of their parents. If a son passes away, the responsibility will shift to the daughter in law, depending on her employment status.
The government has also put in place a structured monitoring system. District collectors will oversee the implementation, while a state level commission led by a retired High Court judge will handle appeals and ensure accountability.
The bill draws inspiration from similar legislation in other states but introduces stricter enforcement mechanisms. Unlike earlier systems where parents had to approach tribunals for support, the new framework allows direct intervention by the government, reducing delays and hardships.
Alongside this, the cabinet approved several other important decisions. A separate bill aimed at preventing hate speech and related crimes has been cleared, introducing strict penalties for violations both online and offline.
The government is also moving forward with plans to take control of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project, with steps being accelerated to complete the process. In addition, a committee has been formed to review findings from the recent social and caste survey conducted across the state.
Another welfare focused bill for gig and platform based workers has also received approval, highlighting the government broader push towards social security and inclusive development.
With these decisions, the Telangana cabinet has signaled a strong commitment to both social responsibility and administrative reforms, placing focus on protecting vulnerable groups while strengthening governance systems.
