In a major push towards sustainable transport, Telangana has introduced a unique initiative that allows government employees to purchase electric vehicles at significantly reduced prices. The scheme offers discounts of up to 20 percent, helping families save as much as Rs 4 lakh on EV purchases.
Unlike traditional subsidy-based policies, the State has secured these benefits through direct negotiations with electric vehicle manufacturers. This bulk agreement model enables upfront price reductions without placing any financial burden on the government.
Several leading EV companies, including Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Gravton Motors and Ather Energy, have already partnered with the State. Discussions are ongoing with other manufacturers to widen the range of available options for buyers.
The move is expected to benefit more than five lakh government employees, positioning them as early adopters of electric mobility. Officials believe this approach will encourage wider public acceptance and accelerate the shift toward greener transport solutions.
The policy also complements existing incentives, such as complete exemption from road tax and registration fees across various categories including two wheelers, cars, taxis and commercial vehicles. This makes EV ownership more practical and cost effective.
To support this transition, the government is expanding charging infrastructure across key locations like government offices, public parking areas and commercial zones. Private businesses are also being encouraged to install charging stations.
Additionally, Telangana plans to convert nearly one lakh auto rickshaws into electric vehicles, along with expanding its electric bus network. The goal is to significantly reduce urban pollution and avoid rising air quality issues seen in other major cities.
Officials say the broader vision is to establish Telangana as a leading hub for EV adoption while attracting investments in manufacturing. The initiative reflects a long term strategy focused on cleaner air, reduced fuel dependence and future ready mobility.
