  • Child safety and women protection priority

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to closely examine legal frameworks that regulate age appropriate access to social media platforms as concerns grow over their impact on children and women. IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh said the move is aimed at making online spaces safer and more responsible.

Speaking after a meeting of the Group of Ministers on Social Media he said unchecked usage among children is affecting concentration education and mental health while women continue to face constant online abuse. According to him the situation can no longer be ignored.

As part of the initiative the state will study global best practices including international models that place responsibility on digital platforms to verify user age. The government has also invited leading social media companies such as Meta Google X and Sharechat for detailed discussions in the upcoming meeting.

Lokesh said public trust in social media is weakening and strong legal measures are required to address misuse. The state intends to create a balanced framework that protects young users without restricting responsible digital engagement.

Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha said the panel will review systems followed by other states and countries before finalising a suitable approach for Andhra Pradesh. She pointed out that nations like Australia have already fixed a minimum age of 16 years for social media use.

The government believes children below a certain age are unable to fully understand online content and risks. Officials said the proposed study will help design policies that encourage safer digital habits while ensuring accountability from social media platforms.
