Google Maps Launches AI Powered Ask Maps Feature for Smarter Local Search
Google has rolled out a new AI driven Ask Maps feature powered by Gemini that allows users to ask questions about places, discover recommendations and plan travel more easily.

In a major update aimed at redefining how people search for locations and plan trips, Google has introduced a new artificial intelligence powered feature called Ask Maps in Google Maps. The company announced the rollout on March 12, bringing conversational search capabilities to the widely used mapping platform.
The feature is currently available in English for users in the United States and India on both Android and iOS devices. According to Google, support for additional languages including Hindi may arrive in the near future.
Ask Maps is powered by Gemini, the company’s advanced artificial intelligence system designed to understand natural language questions. Instead of simply typing a location or category, users can now ask complex real world questions and receive detailed responses directly within the app.
The idea behind the update is to make local discovery more conversational and intuitive. Users can tap the Ask Maps button and ask questions through voice or text. The system then analyzes massive amounts of mapping data to deliver relevant answers, directions and suggestions.
One of the strengths of the new feature is the scale of information behind it. Google Maps processes data from more than 300 million locations around the world and incorporates insights from over 50 million contributors who regularly add reviews, photos and updates to the platform.
This large database allows the AI system to provide highly personalized results. For instance, if someone is planning a trip to Bengaluru, they can simply ask the app to recommend top rated restaurants in the area. Based on previous searches and saved locations, the feature may suggest options that match personal preferences such as vegetarian dining.
Google says the feature can also compare travel routes by analyzing traffic conditions and estimated travel time. Users can view options for driving and public transportation along with clear navigation instructions.
Beyond recommendations, Ask Maps can assist with practical actions as well. The feature may help users book a table at nearby restaurants, save interesting places to lists or begin navigation directly from the conversation interface.
According to Lalitha Ramani, General Manager of Google Maps India, the new feature marks an important step in how people interact with digital maps. She noted that combining the world’s most comprehensive mapping platform with advanced AI models allows local search to evolve into a simple and natural conversation.
The introduction of Ask Maps reflects a broader trend in technology where artificial intelligence is becoming deeply integrated into everyday digital tools. For millions of users who rely on Google Maps daily for commuting, travel and exploration, the update could make discovering places faster and far more interactive.
