India Considers KYC Rules to Curb Fake Profiles, Cybercrime, and Online Harassment
The Indian government is considering implementing KYC rules for social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, and Snapchat to prevent fake accounts, fraud, and online harassment.

The government is reportedly planning a major change for social media users in India. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and X may soon require users to complete KYC, or Know Your Customer, verification before creating or using accounts. This move aims to tackle the rising problems of fake profiles, online fraud, and cybercrime that have been increasingly affecting users across the country.
Fake accounts have become a growing concern on social media, often used for impersonation, harassment, spreading false information, or committing online scams. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to such misuse, with many reports highlighting how these accounts facilitate harassment and fraudulent activities. The proposed KYC requirement intends to make it significantly harder for people to operate anonymously and carry out such actions.
Under the new plan, users may have to verify their real identity, similar to the process followed for bank accounts or SIM card registration. This would link every social media account to an authentic identity, making it easier to track offenders and reduce online misconduct. A parliamentary committee report has recommended extending KYC to social media, gaming, and dating platforms to ensure safer online interactions.
If implemented, the KYC framework could have several major effects. Fake account creation would become challenging, cybercriminals would be easier to identify, and cases of online fraud, harassment, and misinformation could decline. By tying users to verified identities, the government expects people to exercise greater responsibility and reduce misuse on these platforms.
