Netflix Faces Serious Allegations Over User Tracking and Children’s Data Collection

A lawsuit filed in Texas accuses Netflix of secretly collecting user data, tracking viewing habits and designing addictive features that allegedly target children and families for commercial profit.

Fresh concerns over digital privacy have emerged after popular streaming platform Netflix was accused of secretly collecting user data and monitoring viewing habits without proper consent. The allegations, filed through a lawsuit in Texas, have sparked debate around how major streaming companies handle personal information, especially data related to children and families.

According to reports, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed legal action against Netflix, accusing the company of misleading users about its data collection practices. The complaint claims Netflix publicly stated for years that it did not collect or share user information, while allegedly continuing to monitor customer behavior behind the scenes.

The lawsuit argues that Netflix designed its platform in a way that keeps users engaged for long periods, particularly children and young viewers. Officials claim the company tracked audience preferences, screen habits and viewing patterns to build detailed user profiles. The complaint further alleges that this information was shared or sold to advertising technology firms and commercial data brokers, generating billions of dollars in revenue over time.

One of the strongest points mentioned in the legal complaint relates to a previous public statement made by Netflix co founder and chairman Reed Hastings in 2020, where he reportedly claimed that the company did not collect user data. Texas authorities now argue that such statements created a false impression among consumers while the company allegedly continued extensive data tracking operations.

The legal filing also claims Netflix intentionally built features that encourage binge watching and prolonged screen time. According to the complaint, the platform’s business strategy was focused on keeping families and children attached to screens while collecting valuable behavioral data for commercial purposes. The lawsuit even states that users are constantly being monitored while watching content on the platform.

Netflix, however, has strongly denied all accusations. In its response, a company spokesperson said the claims are baseless and built on inaccurate and misleading interpretations of the company’s practices. Netflix stated that it takes user privacy seriously and follows applicable privacy and data protection laws in every region where it operates.

The case has attracted widespread attention because Netflix has a massive global user base. The platform reportedly has more than 325 million paid subscribers worldwide, including millions of users in India alone. With streaming services becoming a daily part of family entertainment, the allegations have raised new questions about how much personal data users unknowingly share while watching online content.

The lawsuit is seeking strict action against Netflix, including the deletion of data that was allegedly collected unlawfully. Authorities also want to ensure that user information is not used for targeted advertising without clear consent. Reports suggest the complaint is asking for civil penalties of up to 10,000 dollars for each alleged violation.
