India opener Abhishek Sharma once again failed to deliver with the bat during the high pressure IND vs ENG semifinal in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The match played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai saw the young batter dismissed cheaply, leaving fans frustrated with his continued poor form.
Abhishek Sharma managed to score only nine runs from seven balls before losing his wicket. His dismissal came while attempting an aggressive shot against England part time off spinner Will Jacks.
The Indian opener began the over with confidence and struck two boundaries early. However, he attempted a big shot by stepping out of the crease and mistimed the delivery. Will Jacks cleverly reduced the pace of the ball, which resulted in the batter failing to judge the speed properly.
The ball took the edge of the bat and went high into the air where Phil Salt positioned at deep midwicket completed an easy catch. The wicket ended India’s opening partnership which had reached 20 runs.
Abhishek Sharma’s weakness against off spin bowling has once again become a major talking point. During the tournament he has been dismissed by off spinners five times, highlighting a clear vulnerability that opposition teams are now targeting.
Statistics from the tournament show that Sharma faced 27 deliveries from off spinners across five innings but managed only 29 runs. His average against off spin stands at 9.66 with a strike rate of just over 107.
The repeated failures have sparked strong reactions from cricket fans on social media. Many supporters criticised the batter for playing a careless shot in such an important match.
Some fans even suggested that the team management should consider dropping Abhishek Sharma from the playing eleven if India reaches the final. They believe the team cannot afford inconsistent performances in crucial matches.
Abhishek Sharma entered the tournament with high expectations due to his reputation as an aggressive T20 batter. Although he scored a half century against Zimbabwe earlier in the competition, he has struggled to maintain that momentum.
With the semifinal being a crucial stage of the tournament, his early dismissal once again raised questions about his form and ability to handle spin bowling under pressure.
