A Telugu woman from Annamayya district who found herself stranded in Oman is set to return home after swift intervention by the Andhra Pradesh government. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu personally assured that the state would stand firmly behind its citizens working abroad, especially in distress situations.
The woman, identified as Shahnaaz from Vayalapadu village, had travelled to Muscat in November last year seeking employment opportunities. However, things took a difficult turn when she became dissatisfied with the job conditions and decided to return to India. Her situation worsened when agents allegedly seized her phone and demanded Rs 2 lakh under the pretext of covering expenses.
Concerned about her safety, Shahnaaz’s family reached out to the APNRT Society, which promptly escalated the matter. The Andhra Pradesh government coordinated with the Embassy of India in Muscat, ensuring that immediate steps were taken to resolve the issue.
In parallel, Andhra Pradesh police engaged with the agents, leading to a breakthrough. The agents eventually agreed to send Shahnaaz back, with travel expenses being arranged to facilitate her return. According to officials, she is expected to land in Andhra Pradesh on May 7.
Reacting to the development, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare and safety of migrant workers. He also appreciated the proactive role played by APNRT Society in coordinating efforts and ensuring that the woman could safely return home.
This incident once again highlights the risks faced by migrant workers and underscores the importance of institutional support systems in protecting their rights and well being abroad.
