In an innovative move to tackle growing traffic congestion, the Telangana government has proposed constructing a six lane underpass beneath the runway of Begumpet Airport. The project is aimed at improving connectivity and easing vehicle movement across key parts of Hyderabad.

The proposed tunnel will stretch for around 600 meters and is part of a larger corridor being developed between Paradise and Suchitra Junction. Officials believe this underground route will help overcome existing road expansion challenges, especially near Tadbund where space constraints have been a major issue.

Authorities have submitted the proposal to the Airports Authority of India, and it is currently under review. Officials are optimistic that approvals could be granted soon, allowing the project to move forward without delays.

The design and technical aspects of the underpass are being jointly evaluated by teams from the National Highways Authority of India and airport authorities. The project is considered unique, as it involves building a road tunnel directly beneath an operational airport runway.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had earlier described this initiative as a first of its kind in the country, highlighting its potential to set a new benchmark in urban infrastructure planning. If approved, the construction is expected to be completed within two years.

The underpass is expected to significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks and improve travel time for commuters moving across the city. With Hyderabad continuing to expand rapidly, such infrastructure solutions are seen as essential for future mobility.

Officials also noted that similar projects are being explored in other parts of the country, but the Begumpet Airport underpass could become one of the first major examples of integrating aviation and urban road infrastructure in India.
