Former CCI Chairman Dhanendra Kumar Dies After Delhi House Fire
A fire triggered by an air conditioner explosion at a Delhi residence claimed the life of former CCI Chairman Dhanendra Kumar, while authorities ruled out any suspicious circumstances.

Former Competition Commission of India Chairman and retired IAS officer Dhanendra Kumar passed away after a fire broke out at his residence in Delhi’s Hauz Khas area late Thursday night. The 80 year old former bureaucrat reportedly suffered severe smoke inhalation and later died while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
According to officials, the fire is believed to have started after the indoor unit of an air conditioner exploded inside the house. Flames quickly spread through parts of the residence, creating panic among family members present at the time of the incident.
Five people were inside the house when the fire erupted. Local residents, along with police personnel, rushed to help and safely evacuated those trapped inside. Dhanendra Kumar was immediately shifted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre in critical condition, but doctors could not save him. His son was also injured during the rescue effort and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Firefighters reached the location soon after receiving an emergency alert and managed to bring the blaze under control. Following a preliminary investigation, police stated that the fire appears to have been caused by the air conditioner explosion and found no evidence suggesting any suspicious angle.
Dhanendra Kumar was widely respected for his contributions to public administration and economic governance. A 1968 batch IAS officer of the Haryana cadre, he served in several important positions, including Secretary in the Defence, Road Transport and Culture ministries. He also represented India at the World Bank during his distinguished career.
His most notable contribution came between 2009 and 2011 when he served as the founding Chairman of the Competition Commission of India. During his tenure, he played a significant role in establishing the institution and strengthening transparency and fair competition practices in the country.
The news of his death has drawn condolences from several prominent leaders, officials and members of the administrative community, who remembered his long service and contribution to the nation.
