India and Canada moved closer on security cooperation as NSA Ajit Doval met Canadian leaders in Ottawa advancing dialogue rebuilding trust restoring coordination and preparing ground for broader diplomatic and economic engagement.

India and Canada took another step toward repairing strained ties as Ajit Doval held high level meetings with Canadian officials in Ottawa earlier this month. The discussions reflected a shared intent to stabilise relations and rebuild practical cooperation after a prolonged diplomatic freeze.

During the visit Doval met Nathalie Drouin as part of an ongoing bilateral security dialogue and also held talks with Gary Anandasangaree. Officials on both sides reviewed progress made in recent months and outlined steps to strengthen coordination between institutions.

A central outcome was agreement on a structured work plan covering national security and law enforcement. Both countries decided to appoint dedicated liaison officers to improve communication and enable faster information sharing on issues such as drug trafficking organised crime and emerging security threats.

The two sides also discussed expanding cooperation in cybersecurity policy, fraud prevention immigration enforcement and information sharing while adhering to domestic laws and international commitments. Officials said the focus would remain on results driven collaboration that directly improves public safety.

The Ottawa meetings signal cautious momentum after the 2023 diplomatic rupture following the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada which had triggered mutual expulsions and stalled engagement. Since then New Delhi and Ottawa have gradually restored diplomatic channels and resumed senior level contacts.

Ahead of Mark Carney’s proposed March visit to India, officials see the renewed security engagement as setting the stage for expanded collaboration across energy, critical minerals, technology, education and cultural exchanges.
