A sharp political exchange unfolded after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent address to the nation. Kharge alleged that the Prime Minister turned an official speech into a political platform, targeting the opposition rather than addressing key national concerns.

He accused Modi of being driven by frustration, claiming that the speech reflected a lack of achievements over the past years. According to Kharge, despite the Model Code of Conduct being in force, the Prime Minister misused government machinery to attack opposition parties and spread misinformation, calling it an insult to democratic values and the Constitution.

Highlighting the content of the speech, Kharge pointed out that Modi mentioned the Congress multiple times while giving limited attention to issues concerning women. He argued that this clearly showed the government’s priorities. Reiterating Congress’s stand, he said the party has always supported women’s reservation and recalled that the bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha in 2010 during Congress rule.

Kharge further criticized the delay in implementing the Women’s Reservation framework, despite support for the newer version of the bill passed in 2023. He demanded that 33 percent reservation for women be implemented immediately within the existing Lok Sabha seats, without linking it to delimitation or census processes.

Accusing the government of misleading the public, Kharge alleged that combining delimitation with women’s reservation was a political strategy aimed at benefiting the ruling party. He also called on the Prime Minister to apologize to citizens for what he termed as false claims and diversionary politics.

The Congress leader emphasized that his party has consistently contributed to major national reforms, including economic liberalization, social welfare laws, and technological advancements. In contrast, he accused the current government of weakening several landmark initiatives introduced by previous administrations.

Kharge also took aim at the ruling party’s stance on women’s safety, citing past incidents and questioning the government’s response. He alleged that the ideological influence of associated organizations reflects an anti women approach, further intensifying the political confrontation.

The remarks signal an escalation in the ongoing political debate, particularly around governance, women’s representation, and accountability ahead of upcoming electoral challenges.
