New Delhi: Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has withdrawn from the FIDE Women Candidates Tournament, citing personal safety concerns linked to the ongoing Iran Israel war tensions. The decision comes just days before the prestigious event is set to begin in Cyprus.

In a statement shared on social media, Humpy made it clear that safety must come before competition. She said she did not feel fully secure despite assurances, adding that stepping away from the tournament was a difficult but necessary choice.

The tournament, scheduled to start on March 28 in Paphos, Cyprus, will determine the challenger for the women world championship title currently held by Ju Wenjun. Humpy withdrawal has opened up a spot in the competition, which will now be filled according to FIDE regulations.

As per the rules, Ukraine player Anna Muzychuk will replace Humpy in the tournament, being the next eligible player in the FIDE Women events cycle. The organizers confirmed that the event will proceed as planned despite the last minute change.

Security concerns have intensified in Cyprus following recent developments in the region. Earlier reports of a drone strike near a British air base on the island raised fresh doubts about safety conditions, especially in the context of the broader conflict in West Asia.

Meanwhile, concerns about the venue are not limited to security alone. American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura has also pointed out issues related to infrastructure, particularly power outages in Cyprus. He described frequent electricity disruptions as worrying ahead of such a major global event.

With top players preparing for one of the most important tournaments in chess, the situation highlights how global tensions can directly affect international sporting events. Humpy decision reflects a growing concern among players about safety and stability in the region.

Despite the setback, the tournament is expected to continue with strong competition as players compete for a chance to challenge for the world title.
