Amid growing speculation about a possible nationwide lockdown, the central government has firmly dismissed such claims, calling them baseless and misleading.
Union ministers have clarified that there is no proposal or discussion regarding imposing a lockdown. The clarification comes at a time when social media is flooded with rumours linking global tensions to potential restrictions within the country.
Officials highlighted that India has sufficient fuel reserves and there is no immediate threat to supply. Authorities are continuously monitoring the energy supply chain and essential services to ensure there is no disruption.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also addressed the issue, stating that while global uncertainty exists due to rising tensions in West Asia, there is no need for panic. She emphasized that the government is fully prepared to handle the situation.
Concerns over fuel shortages had led to long queues at petrol pumps in some areas. However, the government has urged citizens not to indulge in panic buying or believe unverified information circulating online.
In response to rising global crude oil prices, the Centre has already taken steps to reduce the burden on citizens by cutting excise duties on petrol and diesel. This move is expected to provide relief despite international price fluctuations.
Officials reiterated that spreading false information can create unnecessary fear and disrupt normal life. Citizens have been advised to rely only on official announcements and remain calm.
