A tragic accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district claimed the lives of six workers after an under construction bridge over the Betwa River collapsed in the early hours of Friday. Rescue teams rushed to the site as fears remained that additional workers could be trapped beneath the debris.
The incident occurred near the area connecting Morkandar Parsani and Naiti village under the Kurara police station limits. Construction work on the bridge had been progressing as scheduled, with laborers continuing operations through the night before disaster struck.
According to initial reports, weather conditions changed dramatically around 3 am. Strong winds and stormy conditions swept through the region, placing immense pressure on the partially completed structure. Moments later, major sections of the bridge gave way.
Heavy shuttering components, concrete slabs, and supporting sections collapsed suddenly, falling onto workers who were either beneath or beside the structure. Several laborers became trapped under the massive debris, leaving little chance to escape.
Local residents alerted authorities immediately after the collapse. Police personnel, district officials, and disaster response teams reached the location and launched emergency rescue operations. The accident created panic in the surrounding area as efforts intensified to locate survivors.
Rescue work faced significant challenges due to darkness and adverse weather conditions. Despite the obstacles, teams continued operations through the night using heavy machinery, including excavators and specialized cutting equipment, to remove the wreckage and search for those trapped beneath the collapsed bridge.
Officials are continuing rescue and recovery efforts while investigating the circumstances surrounding the structural failure. Authorities are also assessing whether weather conditions alone caused the collapse or if other factors contributed to the tragedy.
