Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has issued a strong warning to the central government over the proposed delimitation exercise, stating that any move perceived as unfair to southern states would trigger large scale protests.

Speaking through a video message in Chennai, Stalin questioned the timing of a proposed special session of Parliament where discussions around increasing Lok Sabha seats are expected. He raised concerns about introducing such a significant proposal while several states are in the middle of assembly elections.

The Chief Minister made it clear that his party would participate in the session but would not hesitate to oppose any decision that harms the interests of Tamil Nadu or the southern region. He warned that if injustice occurs, people across the state would take to the streets, signaling a strong public response.

Stalin also pointed out that the implementation of women reservation in legislatures is being linked to delimitation and census processes, which could delay its rollout. He stressed that these issues should be handled separately to avoid confusion and unnecessary complications.

Raising a broader concern, he questioned whether states that successfully followed population control policies are now being placed at a disadvantage. According to him, southern states have made consistent progress in development and governance, and should not be penalized through reduced political representation.

The Chief Minister criticized the lack of clarity from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that repeated requests for an assurance that southern states will not lose representation have gone unanswered. He urged the Centre to provide a clear commitment in Parliament.

Political reactions have intensified across parties. Leaders from opposition groups echoed similar concerns, arguing that a population based delimitation could widen the gap between northern and southern states. They emphasized that states such as Tamil Nadu Kerala Karnataka Andhra Pradesh and Telangana should not face reduced representation despite their contributions.

Meanwhile, leaders from the ruling side have responded by cautioning against statements that could create regional divisions. The debate has brought the issue of fair representation and federal balance back into focus at the national level.

Stalin concluded by asserting that he is prepared to lead protests if required, drawing inspiration from past movements, and reiterated that the voice of the southern states must be protected in any future political restructuring.
