Telangana Government Speeds Up TGSRTC Merger Process

The Telangana government has intensified efforts to merge the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation with the state administration, a long standing demand raised by RTC employees over the years. Officials are actively working on the process, and an important announcement is likely to be made around the State Formation Day celebrations on June 2.

According to sources in the Secretariat, the merger proposal is being treated as a priority initiative by the government leadership. If approved, the decision is expected to be presented as a major welfare measure for RTC workers across the state.

To ensure a smooth implementation, the government had earlier appointed a high level committee to study the legal and administrative aspects of the merger. As part of the exercise, officials visited Andhra Pradesh and several other states to understand how RTC systems were integrated into government structures and what challenges emerged during the transition.

After reviewing different models, the committee reportedly submitted a detailed report to the Telangana government. Based on those findings, authorities are now preparing guidelines and operational procedures for the merger.

The proposed decision is expected to directly benefit nearly 37,360 RTC employees, who could soon receive the status of government staff. This may provide greater employment security along with salaries and benefits comparable to other state government employees.

At the same time, the merger is likely to increase the financial burden on the state exchequer. Preliminary estimates from the finance department suggest the government may have to bear an additional annual expense of more than Rs 1,000 crore towards salaries and employee related costs.

Despite the financial implications, the government appears determined to move ahead with the plan, highlighting employee welfare and institutional stability as key priorities behind the decision.
