A cargo vessel traveling toward India became the target of a serious maritime attack near the Strait of Hormuz raising concerns about the safety of international shipping routes. The Iran missile attack on ship occurred as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.
The vessel identified as Mayuri Nari had departed from Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates and was heading toward Kandla Port in Gujarat. During its journey through the Strait of Hormuz the ship was reportedly struck by two missiles.
The attack caused a fire in the engine room of the vessel and heavy smoke quickly spread across the ship. At the time of the incident there were twenty three crew members on board.
Following the explosion the ship captain instructed most of the crew to abandon the vessel. Twenty crew members wearing life jackets jumped into the sea and were later rescued by the Oman Navy which quickly reached the area after receiving distress information.
The rescued sailors were transported safely to the port town of Khasab in Oman. However three crew members who were reportedly inside the engine room during the explosion remain missing and search operations are continuing.
The cargo ship is approximately one hundred seventy eight meters long and has the capacity to carry around thirty thousand tons. Authorities said the vessel was not carrying cargo at the time of the attack.
Indian authorities strongly condemned the Iran missile attack on ship and stated that targeting commercial vessels is unacceptable. Officials emphasized that attacks on civilian maritime transport threaten global trade and endanger innocent crew members.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important shipping routes in the world with a significant share of global oil and cargo shipments passing through the narrow waterway.
Iranian military officials later stated that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz must obtain permission from Iranian naval authorities. According to their statement the vessel was attacked after ignoring warnings.
The incident comes amid increasing conflict in the region involving Iran the United States and Israel. Maritime security concerns have grown as several commercial vessels have reportedly faced attacks since the conflict escalated.
In addition to the maritime incident Iran has issued warnings targeting major international technology and financial companies linked to the United States and Israel.
Officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also claimed that large scale military operations were carried out against various targets as part of retaliation for earlier attacks.
Meanwhile international organizations and regional alliances are urging all parties to avoid escalating the conflict further and to protect international trade routes that are vital to global economic stability.
