India’s road accident victims are set to receive immediate relief as the Union government rolled out the PM RAHAT Scheme, a landmark initiative that ensures free emergency medical treatment without paperwork or upfront payments. The decision was among the first signed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after shifting his office to the newly inaugurated Seva Teertham and Kartavya Bhavan complex.
Under the PM RAHAT Scheme, any person injured in a road accident can receive cashless treatment worth up to Rs 1.5 lakh at empanelled hospitals. Victims no longer need to worry about insurance documents income certificates or advance payments during the critical hours following an accident. The government has made it clear that saving lives comes first while formalities can wait.
As per the scheme guidelines, accident victims will receive stabilisation treatment for up to 24 hours in non critical cases. In life threatening situations the treatment window extends to 48 hours. The entire cost will be borne by the central government with hospitals reimbursed through a digital claim process. Coverage under the scheme is currently limited to seven days.
Alongside the PM RAHAT Scheme, the Prime Minister also approved a series of welfare focused initiatives aimed at long term social and economic impact. The government announced that the target of creating three crore Lakhpati Didis through self help groups has already been achieved ahead of schedule. Building on this success a new goal has been set to create six crore Lakhpati Didis by March 2029.
To strengthen rural livelihoods the agricultural infrastructure fund has been doubled from Rs 1 lakh crore to Rs 2 lakh crore. This expanded fund is expected to support warehouses cold storage facilities and village level infrastructure enabling farmers to store produce and secure better prices.
The government has also reinforced its push for innovation and youth entrepreneurship by approving Startup India Fund of Funds 2.0 with a Rs 10,000 crore corpus. The fund will support early stage startups especially in deep tech manufacturing and emerging technology sectors.
With the launch of the PM RAHAT Scheme and a series of welfare driven decisions the government has signalled a strong shift toward people first governance combining immediate relief with long term development goals.
