Microsoft has quietly updated the usage terms for its Copilot AI tools, introducing language that signals a more cautious stance on how the technology should be used. The company now describes Copilot as a tool intended primarily for entertainment purposes and advises users to rely on it at their own risk.
The shift comes as AI systems, including large language models like those behind Copilot, continue to face challenges around accuracy. These systems can sometimes generate incorrect or fabricated information, a phenomenon often referred to as hallucination. While improvements have reduced such instances, they have not been eliminated entirely, prompting companies to be more explicit about limitations.
Despite the updated wording, Microsoft is not discouraging the use of Copilot for professional tasks. Instead, it is emphasizing that users should treat AI as a supportive tool rather than a decision maker. The company recommends verifying outputs before using them in critical contexts, especially in business or data driven environments.
The revised terms, which were introduced in October last year, appear to be designed to limit Microsoft’s legal exposure in cases where users act on inaccurate AI generated content. By placing responsibility on the user to validate information, the company is aligning itself with a broader industry trend of issuing disclaimers around AI reliability.
Copilot was originally positioned as a productivity enhancer, deeply integrated into Microsoft 365 applications such as Excel and PowerPoint. Over time, the company has expanded the Copilot brand significantly, with reports indicating that dozens of products now carry the name across its ecosystem.
Even with the updated cautionary language, Microsoft continues to actively promote Copilot in enterprise and consumer markets. Internal discussions highlighted ambitious sales goals, and the company has reported steady progress in adoption, although only a small percentage of customers currently pay for the service.
Earlier this year, Microsoft also introduced new collaborative AI features aimed at improving workplace efficiency. These tools reflect the company’s ongoing investment in AI driven workflows, even as it acknowledges the technology’s limitations.
