One of the most important guidelines is that certain personal details cannot be changed multiple times. According to UIDAI norms, Aadhaar holders are allowed to update their date of birth and gender only once in their lifetime. This restriction means users must double check their information before requesting any correction, as a second chance will not be available.
The rule has been put in place to prevent misuse of identity data. Authorities believe that allowing repeated changes in sensitive fields could open doors to fraud or manipulation of identity. By limiting updates, the system aims to maintain reliability and trust in Aadhaar as a verified identity document.
For those needing to correct their date of birth, valid supporting documents are mandatory. Accepted proofs include a birth certificate, passport, or school certificates such as a Class 10 marksheet. These documents must clearly display the correct date of birth, as incomplete or unclear submissions may lead to rejection of the request.
Updating gender information follows a slightly different process. UIDAI allows this change based on self declaration, meaning users do not need to submit supporting documents. However, the request must be completed through an Aadhaar enrolment center, where the update is processed after verifying the applicant’s details.
The process to update these details has also been streamlined through digital services. Users can log in to the official Aadhaar portal using their Aadhaar number and a one time password sent to their registered mobile number. After selecting the update option, they can submit the required information and upload documents if needed.
A nominal fee is charged for completing the update request. Once the application is submitted, users receive an Update Request Number, which can be used to track the progress of their request online.
Officials emphasize that even small errors in Aadhaar details can lead to complications while accessing services such as banking, government schemes or mobile connections. With strict limits now in place, users are advised to review all information carefully before initiating any update.
