Millions of Indians rely on Aadhaar for everyday services, from banking to government benefits. But a lesser known rule issued by Unique Identification Authority of India is now drawing attention, as it limits how many times certain personal details can be corrected in the system.
According to the latest guidelines, Aadhaar holders can update their date of birth and gender only once in their lifetime. This means any mistake made during enrolment or even during the first correction could become permanent if not handled carefully. Officials say the rule is aimed at maintaining the integrity of identity data and preventing misuse.
The restriction has made accuracy more important than ever. While Aadhaar allows multiple updates for some fields like address, these two critical details come with strict limitations. Users planning any correction are being advised to double check documents and information before submitting requests.
Updating the date of birth requires valid proof. Documents such as a birth certificate, passport, or Class 10 marksheet are typically accepted, provided they clearly mention the correct date. Authorities stress that only verified and government approved documents will be considered during the process.
In contrast, updating gender is relatively simpler. No supporting document is required, and the change is processed based on self declaration. However, this too can be done only once, and users must visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre to complete the request.
The process for making these updates has largely moved online. Through the official Aadhaar portal, users can log in using their Aadhaar number and OTP verification. After selecting the update option, they can upload required documents or submit their request accordingly. A nominal fee is charged, and once the request is filed, a tracking number is issued to monitor progress.
Authorities explain that these strict rules are necessary to prevent identity fraud. Allowing repeated changes to sensitive details like date of birth or gender could create loopholes in the system, making it easier for misuse. By limiting updates, the system aims to ensure that Aadhaar remains a reliable proof of identity.
