- AP pension scheme to provide monthly financial support to lakhs
The Andhra Pradesh government is set to roll out a major welfare initiative by approving new pensions for eligible beneficiaries starting June. The move is expected to bring relief to lakhs of people who have been waiting for financial assistance across the state.
The decision is likely to be implemented from June 12, marking two years since the coalition government came to power. Officials indicate that the government aims to begin disbursing pensions to newly identified beneficiaries from that date.
Priority will be given to widows, with estimates suggesting around 1.53 lakh eligible applicants in this category. The government is planning to provide a monthly pension of Rs 4000 to each beneficiary, which could result in an expenditure of nearly Rs 61 crore per month.
The administration has already been extending pensions under the spouse category, where widows receive financial support immediately after the death of their husbands who were existing pension beneficiaries. So far, around 2.30 lakh such pensions have been sanctioned, ensuring continuity of support without delay.
However, widows whose spouses were not pension recipients have been facing delays in receiving benefits. Responding to growing demand and representations from the public, the government has now decided to include all eligible widows under the pension scheme.
In addition, the government is also focusing on providing pensions to persons with disabilities. Over one lakh applications have already been received in this category, and eligible applicants are expected to be approved in the upcoming rollout.
Across all categories, officials anticipate that nearly 10 lakh people may apply for new pensions. To support such a large number of beneficiaries, the state could incur an estimated monthly expenditure of Rs 400 crore, translating to nearly Rs 4899 crore annually.
With this initiative, the Andhra Pradesh government aims to strengthen its welfare framework and ensure timely financial support reaches those in need.
