India on Thursday confirmed that former naval officer Commander Purnendu Tiwari has been sentenced by a court in Qatar in a case unrelated to the earlier espionage charges that had drawn global attention.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the verdict was delivered by the Qatar Court of Cassation in February 2026. The case also involved an Omani business owner and a Qatari official, who were sentenced alongside Tiwari.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified during the weekly briefing that this development is entirely separate from the earlier case in which Tiwari and seven other former Indian naval personnel had been accused of espionage.
In that earlier high profile case, all eight individuals were eventually cleared of charges and released following diplomatic efforts by India. The other seven former officers had returned to India after their release nearly two years ago.
The government emphasized that it has been extending continuous support to Tiwari. Officials from the Indian Embassy in Doha have remained in regular contact with him and his family and have also met him several times during his detention.
The fresh sentencing has once again drawn attention to Tiwari’s situation, even as authorities reiterated that legal proceedings in the current case are independent of the previously resolved espionage matter.
