Governor Abdul Nazeer, who also serves as Chancellor, delivered a detailed address on the rich history of Andhra University during its centenary celebrations, reflecting on the institution’s remarkable journey over the past hundred years. He paid tribute to the visionaries and educators who shaped the university into a respected center of learning.

Recalling its origins, the Governor noted that the demand for a separate university for Telugu speaking regions dates back to 1913. This led to the enactment of the Andhra University Act in April 1926. Initially established in Vijayawada, the institution was later shifted to Visakhapatnam through the efforts of its founding Vice Chancellor Sir CR Reddy, who laid a strong academic foundation.

He also remembered the contributions of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who succeeded as Vice Chancellor and played a key role in strengthening the university’s academic stature. The Governor highlighted Radhakrishnan’s belief that true education finds meaning through experience, a principle that continues to guide the institution.

The university’s expansion was supported by generous contributions from royal families including those of Bobbili, Vizianagaram and Pithapuram, along with the Maharajas of Travancore and Panagal. Their patronage helped in building infrastructure such as academic blocks and hostels, enabling the university to grow steadily.

Highlighting its distinguished alumni, the Governor mentioned Nobel laureate Sir CV Raman and renowned statistician Professor CR Rao as proud products of the university. He also referred to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s praise of the institution as an outstanding university.

Concluding his speech, Governor Nazeer extended greetings to faculty, staff, students and alumni, and offered his respects to all the great personalities who contributed to the university’s legacy, acknowledging their role in shaping its century long journey.
