Tamil Nadu politics appears to be heading toward a dramatic turning point as early trends from the assembly election results indicate a fractured mandate. The long standing dominance of Dravidian parties is facing an unexpected challenge, with actor turned politician Vijay emerging as a central figure in the unfolding scenario.

According to the latest trends, the ruling DMK led by M. K. Stalin has slipped to third position in the race. In contrast, Vijay’s newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has surged ahead, leading in 67 constituencies, while the AIADMK alliance under Edappadi K. Palaniswami is close behind with leads in 66 seats. The DMK is trailing with around 62 seats, far below expectations.

The contest has turned sharply competitive, with no single party nearing the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234 member assembly. If the current trends continue, Tamil Nadu is likely to witness a hung assembly, a rare outcome in a state known for decisive mandates.

Pre election predictions had largely favored the DMK to retain power comfortably. However, one survey had hinted at the so called Vijay effect, suggesting that his party could emerge as a decisive player. The ongoing results now appear to reflect that possibility.

For decades, Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has largely revolved around a direct contest between DMK and AIADMK. The sudden rise of Vijay has disrupted this pattern, introducing a new dynamic that could redefine the state’s political future.

As counting progresses, the spotlight remains firmly on Vijay and Palaniswami, whose roles may become crucial in determining the formation of the next government. The developments mark what many observers see as the beginning of a new phase in Tamil Nadu politics.
