WhatsApp to Stop Working on Several Old Android Phones From Tomorrow
WhatsApp will end support for many older Android smartphones running Android 5 or below, affecting users who still rely on outdated devices for daily messaging and communication services

Millions of WhatsApp users may soon face disruption as the messaging platform prepares to end support for several older Android smartphones starting tomorrow. Devices running Android 5.0 or older versions will no longer be able to use the app, according to the latest platform requirements.
The decision is expected to affect users who are still using smartphones launched nearly eight to ten years ago. Many people have already started receiving notifications from WhatsApp warning them that support for their devices will soon end.
The company says the move is necessary to maintain stronger security, improve performance and support newer features. Older operating systems often stop receiving security updates, making them more vulnerable to hacking attempts, malware and online fraud.
Over the years, WhatsApp has evolved far beyond basic text messaging. People now use the platform for sharing banking information, personal photos, office files, important documents and OTP related communication. Because of this, maintaining a secure environment has become increasingly important for the company.
Several popular smartphone models from brands such as Samsung, Motorola, Sony, LG, HTC, Vivo, OPPO and OnePlus are expected to lose WhatsApp support. Some of the affected devices include Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4, Motorola Moto G first and second generation models, Moto E series and Moto X series smartphones.
Older Sony Xperia Z series phones are also included in the list, along with LG Nexus 4 and LG Optimus G devices. HTC One X, OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 users may also experience the app shutdown if their phones are still running outdated Android versions.
A number of older OPPO and Vivo smartphones are also expected to be affected. These reportedly include OPPO Find 7, Find 7a, Mirror 5, Neo 5 and Joy 3, as well as Vivo X5 Pro, Vivo Y15, Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y27.
Industry experts say the decision reflects the growing gap between modern app requirements and aging smartphone hardware. As apps become more advanced, supporting outdated systems becomes increasingly difficult for developers.
Users who are unsure whether their phone will continue supporting WhatsApp can easily check the Android version installed on their device. This can be done by opening the Settings menu and selecting About Phone or Software Information. The Android version will be displayed there.
If the device is running Android 5.0 or an older version, WhatsApp may stop functioning from tomorrow. Users can also check the Google Play Store to see whether new WhatsApp updates are still available for their phone.
For users affected by the change, upgrading to a newer smartphone may become necessary to continue using WhatsApp safely and without interruptions. Experts also recommend backing up chats, photos and important files before support officially ends to avoid losing personal data.
