A new political chapter is set to begin in Tamil Nadu as TVK chief Vijay prepares to take oath as the state’s new Chief Minister on Sunday. The swearing in ceremony will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai at 10 am.
The event has attracted national attention as senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is expected to attend the ceremony. Officials said Rahul Gandhi will arrive in Chennai in the morning ahead of the oath taking event.
Heavy security arrangements have been made across important parts of the city due to the presence of national leaders, political representatives, and film personalities. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will administer the oath of office to Vijay.
Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. However, the party fell short of the majority mark needed to form the government on its own in the 234 member assembly.
Soon after the election results, Congress extended support to Vijay. Left parties, VCK, and IUML also backed the alliance, helping the coalition reach the support of 120 MLAs. Following this, Governor Arlekar officially invited Vijay to form the government.
Sources indicate that only a small group of ministers may take oath along with Vijay initially, while the full cabinet expansion could happen later. Supporters and party workers have already gathered in large numbers to celebrate the occasion, marking a major turning point in Tamil Nadu politics.
