Apple May Discontinue Budget MacBook Neo Variant Amid Rising Component Costs

Apple is reportedly planning to stop selling the affordable 256GB MacBook Neo variant in India as rising memory prices and supply chain pressure continue affecting production costs globally.

Apple users in India could soon see a major change in the company’s laptop lineup. Reports suggest that the tech giant may discontinue the most affordable 256GB variant of the MacBook Neo, a device that gained attention for bringing Apple’s premium laptop experience at a relatively lower price point. The move is believed to be linked to rising component prices and increasing pressure on profit margins.

According to recent industry reports, Apple has been facing growing costs related to memory components and supply chain operations. Analysts believe that DRAM prices have increased significantly over the past few months, making it difficult for the company to maintain pricing on entry level devices. Because of this, Apple may shift its focus toward the higher priced 512GB storage model in the coming months.

The MacBook Neo was introduced in India with a starting price of Rs 69,900 for the 256GB version. Meanwhile, the 512GB model carries a price tag of Rs 79,900. Reports claim Apple could eventually remove the cheaper model from sale to maintain its premium positioning and improve overall margins. However, the company has not officially confirmed these plans yet.

Interestingly, the laptop is currently available at a heavy discount during the ongoing Amazon Great Summer Sale. Buyers can purchase the MacBook Neo for Rs 61,990 after a direct price cut. Customers using HDFC Bank credit cards can also receive an additional Rs 4,000 discount, reducing the effective price to Rs 57,990. This has made the device one of the most attractive premium laptop deals available online right now.

The MacBook Neo has managed to attract students, office users and first time Apple buyers because of its lightweight design and strong performance. Weighing just 1.23 kilograms, the laptop is designed for portability while still offering premium features. It comes with a 13 inch Liquid Retina IPS display featuring a resolution of 2408 x 1506 pixels and delivers sharp visuals suitable for entertainment and productivity tasks.

Apple has powered the MacBook Neo with the A18 Pro chip, the same processor family seen in the latest iPhone 16 Pro models. The company claims the chipset delivers significantly faster performance compared to many Windows laptops powered by Intel Core Ultra processors. Users can expect smooth multitasking, faster AI based tasks and improved battery efficiency during everyday use.

The laptop is equipped with 8GB unified memory and offers SSD storage options of either 256GB or 512GB. Unlike the MacBook Air series, users cannot upgrade the RAM configuration. Apple has also included a Magic Keyboard, while the 512GB variant additionally supports Touch ID for secure unlocking and payments.

On the multimedia front, the MacBook Neo features a 1080p FaceTime HD camera paired with dual microphones supporting voice isolation and wide spectrum audio modes. The dual speaker setup supports Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio, offering a richer sound experience for movies, music and video calls.

Connectivity options on the laptop include Wi Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6, USB Type C ports and a headphone jack. Apple says the built in 36.5Wh battery can deliver up to 11 hours of web browsing and nearly 16 hours of video playback on a single charge. The device ships with a 20W USB Type C charger and charging cable inside the box.

While Apple has not made any official announcement regarding discontinuation, reports surrounding the future of the 256GB MacBook Neo have already sparked discussions among users. Many buyers who were planning to purchase an affordable Apple laptop may now look to take advantage of ongoing discounts before any possible changes are introduced.
