Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has taken a major decision to shut down liquor outlets operating near schools, colleges, religious places and bus stands across the state.

The Tamil Nadu government issued official orders stating that no TASMAC liquor shops should function within a radius of 500 metres from temples, mosques, churches, educational institutions and major bus stands. Authorities have been instructed to complete the closure process within the next two weeks.

According to government data, a total of 717 liquor shops have been identified for closure under the new policy. Among them, 276 outlets are located near religious places, 186 are close to educational institutions and another 255 are situated near bus stands.

Officials stated that the decision was taken keeping public welfare and social concerns in mind. The government believes relocating or shutting such outlets will help create safer surroundings for students, families and devotees visiting religious centres.

Tamil Nadu currently has around 4765 retail liquor shops operating under the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation known as TASMAC. The latest move is expected to significantly reduce the presence of liquor outlets in sensitive public areas.

The announcement has already sparked widespread discussion across the state, with many people welcoming the decision as a positive step toward improving public environments around schools and places of worship.
