Traffic police carried out large scale drunken drive inspections across Hyderabad and the twin cities during the weekend, resulting in hundreds of motorists being caught for driving under the influence of alcohol. Officials said the raids were conducted at several major junctions on Friday and Saturday nights as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety.
According to police data, a total of 474 people were booked during the latest special checks. Among them, the majority were two wheeler riders, while several auto drivers, car drivers, and heavy vehicle operators were also found driving after consuming alcohol.
Authorities revealed that many offenders recorded high blood alcohol levels during testing. While some drivers were found with moderate alcohol content, a significant number crossed dangerous limits, with a few individuals recording extremely high alcohol readings above 300 points. Police officials expressed concern over the increasing number of repeat offenders despite continuous awareness campaigns.
After being caught, the motorists were taken into custody and their vehicles were seized. Cases were registered against them before they were released on personal bonds. Traffic police stated that all offenders would undergo counseling sessions and later appear before the court, where punishments would be decided according to law.
City Joint Traffic Police Commissioner Joel Davis said strict drunken drive raids would continue regularly across Hyderabad to control reckless driving and reduce accident risks. He stressed that authorities are committed to taking strong action against drunk driving violations in the city.
Separate enforcement drives were also conducted in surrounding commissionerates. In the Malkajgiri area, more than 320 people were reportedly caught during inspections, including two wheeler riders, auto drivers, and car drivers. Similar raids in Cyberabad led to the detection of nearly 300 drunken driving cases involving motorists from different vehicle categories.
