Daily commuters using Hyderabad Metro may soon experience more comfortable journeys as the Telangana government moves ahead with plans to purchase sixty additional metro coaches. The decision comes in response to growing passenger congestion across the city’s busiest metro routes during peak office hours.
Officials are expected to sign an agreement with Bengaluru based Bharat Earth Movers Limited this week for the supply of the new coaches. According to sources, the company has assured the government that all coaches can be delivered within fifteen months from the date of order confirmation.
Hyderabad Metro has become one of the most preferred modes of transport for city residents, with nearly five lakh passengers using the service every day. However, the increasing rush during morning and evening hours has created severe crowding inside trains, especially on routes such as Nagole to Raidurg and LB Nagar to Miyapur.
At present, the metro operates fifty six train sets across three corridors, with each train consisting of only three coaches. Due to limited capacity, many passengers struggle even to find standing space during busy hours. Commuters are often forced to travel in packed compartments, leading to repeated demands for additional coaches.
The coach procurement process gained momentum after the Hyderabad Metro Rail project came fully under government control. Earlier attempts to temporarily lease coaches from Nagpur Metro reportedly failed because of technical compatibility issues.
The new coaches will be manufactured by BEML, a major public sector company based in Bengaluru. Officials said the process had been delayed earlier due to internal administrative reasons, but negotiations are now in the final stage.
The original Hyderabad Metro coaches were purchased from South Korean company Hyundai Rotem in 2015 at a cost of nearly 1800 crore rupees. These trains were designed using advanced driverless compatible technology and can carry close to 965 passengers in a single train set.
Authorities believe the addition of new coaches will significantly improve passenger comfort and help manage rising commuter demand across Hyderabad’s expanding metro network.
