Fine variety paddy cultivated by Telangana farmers is witnessing strong demand from neighboring states this season, bringing encouraging market conditions for growers across several districts. Traders from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu are actively visiting Telangana border regions to purchase large quantities of fine rice directly from farmers and rice millers.
The growing demand comes at a time when the Telangana government has been strongly encouraging farmers to cultivate fine rice varieties. As part of its policy, the state has been offering an additional bonus of 500 rupees per quintal above the minimum support price for farmers producing fine quality paddy. The government has also been promoting fine rice through ration distribution and welfare hostels, which further boosted cultivation across the state.
Officials say the increasing production of fine rice in Telangana has now attracted traders from multiple neighboring states. Districts such as Gadwal, Narayanpet, Bodhan in Nizamabad district, Vikarabad, and Mahabubnagar are witnessing large scale purchases by Karnataka traders. Similar buying activity is also being reported from border districts connected to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
One of the major reasons behind the sudden increase in demand is the crop holiday announced in several Karnataka districts including Raichur, Ballari, and Koppal. Reports indicate that repair works at the Tungabhadra Dam affected irrigation availability in those regions, forcing authorities there to pause cultivation activities this season.
With reduced local production in Karnataka, traders are now depending heavily on Telangana’s fine rice supply. Officials stated that a large share of the fine rice consumed in Bengaluru traditionally comes from these Karnataka districts, but the current crop holiday shifted market attention toward Telangana farmers.
Business activity has also increased in Nalgonda, Khammam, and Suryapet districts where Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu traders are purchasing fine paddy through local middlemen. Rice millers in Miryalaguda are also reportedly buying significant quantities from farmers due to growing demand.
According to officials, the Telangana Civil Supplies Department initially expected to procure nearly 90 lakh tonnes of paddy during the Yasangi season. However, current estimates suggest procurement may remain between 75 and 80 lakh tonnes because a substantial portion of the fine grain is being sold directly to traders from neighboring states.
