Single Soundbox System May Soon Replace Multiple UPI Devices for Indian Shopkeepers

NPCI is developing a unified Soundbox solution that could support all major UPI apps together, helping shopkeepers reduce costs, save counter space and simplify digital payment management across stores.

India’s growing digital payment ecosystem may soon become much easier for small shopkeepers and local businesses. The National Payments Corporation of India is reportedly working on a new interoperable Soundbox system that can support multiple UPI platforms through a single device. The move is expected to reduce operational costs for merchants and simplify payment confirmation during busy business hours.

At present, many retailers across the country use separate Soundbox devices for different payment apps such as PhonePe, Paytm and Google Pay. Since most existing Soundboxes are linked to specific payment providers, merchants often end up installing multiple devices on the same counter. This not only increases monthly expenses but also creates unnecessary clutter in small shops where space is already limited.

The upcoming system being planned by NPCI aims to solve this issue with a single device capable of handling alerts from all supported UPI applications. Whether a customer pays through PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay, BHIM or another UPI platform, the same Soundbox would provide instant audio confirmation of the transaction.

The idea could bring major relief to millions of small traders and kirana store owners who currently pay monthly subscription fees for multiple devices. In many cases, payment companies charge around Rs 100 to Rs 150 per Soundbox every month. For businesses accepting payments from several UPI apps, these costs can add up over time. A unified system would allow merchants to manage everything using one device instead of maintaining separate setups.

For customers, the payment process is unlikely to change much. They can continue using their preferred UPI application without any additional steps. The difference will mainly be visible at the merchant’s end, where one Soundbox will handle every transaction alert regardless of the app used for payment.

Industry experts believe the initiative could make digital transactions more efficient, especially in crowded markets, roadside stores and small retail outlets where quick payment confirmation is important. It may also encourage more small businesses to fully adopt digital payments without worrying about extra hardware costs.

The development reflects the rapid evolution of India’s UPI ecosystem, which has become one of the world’s largest real time digital payment networks. By focusing on interoperability and convenience, NPCI’s new Soundbox model could further streamline everyday transactions for both merchants and customers across the country.
