In a major boost to the textile sector, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced a free electricity scheme for weavers, aiming to ease financial pressure and support their livelihoods.

The scheme will come into effect from April 1 and will provide free electricity up to 200 units for handloom workers and up to 500 units for powerloom workers. Officials say this initiative is designed to strengthen the economic condition of weavers across the state.

Minister Savita shared details of the scheme while visiting the Gandhi Bunakar Mela and National Handloom Expo in Vijayawada. She highlighted that the exhibition, which showcases handloom products, will continue until the end of the month and serves as a platform to promote weavers’ work.

The government has been focusing on multiple welfare measures for the weaving community. Along with free electricity, eligible beneficiaries are also receiving pensions of Rs 4000 from the age of 50, fulfilling promises made during elections.

According to the minister, the leadership including Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Minister Nara Lokesh is committed to improving the conditions of weavers and understanding their challenges.

Authorities are also encouraging the use of modern platforms such as social media to help artisans market their products more effectively. This approach is expected to increase income opportunities and visibility for handloom products.

The government believes that the handloom sector plays a vital role in employment after agriculture and remains an important part of the state’s economy. Continuous support through subsidies, exhibitions and skill development programs is being extended to ensure growth in the sector.

With the introduction of free electricity, the state aims to provide immediate relief to weavers while strengthening their long term sustainability and contribution to the economy.
