Hotels across Andhra Pradesh are facing a severe gas cylinder shortage, forcing authorities and industry representatives to consider curbs on operating hours, weekly shutdowns, and scaled down menu offerings.

The crisis has reached a point where many hotel kitchens are being forced to switch to alternative cooking methods such as firewood, coal stoves, and biogas due to the unavailability of commercial LPG cylinders. The situation has drawn comparisons to the disruptions seen during the pandemic period.

Following discussions between hotel associations and civil supplies officials, a set of proposed measures has emerged to manage the limited supply. These include restricting hotel operations from morning until night, introducing a weekly closure for all establishments, and significantly cutting down menu items in larger hotels.

While the proposal suggests a weekly closure, authorities are reportedly considering some flexibility to avoid inconvenience to customers across the state. At the same time, restaurants may be required to reduce their menu size to ensure efficient use of available resources.

The shortage has been linked to supply constraints, as a large share of LPG is being allocated to domestic consumers, leaving a smaller portion for commercial use. Smaller hotels have raised concerns that even the limited supply is largely reaching bigger establishments.

In response, both the government and hotel operators are exploring alternatives to reduce dependence on LPG. Traditional cooking methods and items that consume less gas are being encouraged, and even food delivery volumes are being adjusted to cope with the situation.

With demand continuing to outpace supply, the hospitality sector is now navigating a challenging phase, balancing customer needs with operational limitations.
